Now is the time to turn back if you’d prefer not to know anything or haven’t seen season 1 yet.
Shadow and Bone season 2 Release Date: When will it be available?
Unfortunately, season 2 still doesn’t have an official release date.
The second season of Shadow and Bone is on the way, as the officials announce its return news during Netflix Geeked Week in June. Aside from that, there are no other details on when we can see it again. However, you can check out the details from this Tweet.

Eric Heisserer revealed on his Twitter account that he wrote most of the scripts for the upcoming season. In April 2021, a second season of the show was picked up by Netflix.

Bardugo’s Instagram post suggests that, too. The author told her followers she’d take a social media break to work on season 2 of Shadow and Bone, among other things. By the end of the year, the bulk of pre-production work should be completed.

Shawn Levy told Collider that production would start once Heisserer and Bardugo finish their scripts. But, unfortunately, we didn’t hear anything since.
The publication reports that Shadow and Bone season 2 will begin filming in November 2021. Unfortunately, that statement appears to be inaccurate.
According to What’s On Netflix, principal photography will begin in January 2022. According to the Productions List, Shadow and Bone will be shot between January 10 and May 18 for movies and TV shows filming in Canada. Reports indicate filming will also occur in Budapest this time.
Roster Con in Paris will also feature Shadow and Bone cast members on January 22 and 23. Maybe we’ll hear about season 2’s start date and new cast members.
Hopefully, season 2 won’t be too far away. The second season of Shadow and Bone might air in late 2022 if that happens soon. After that, filming will end, but post-production will continue. That’s why we believe Shadow and Bone season 2 will premiere in early 2023.

Shadow and Bone Season 2 Cast: Who Will Return?
We expect that all of season 1’s main stars will return. Among them are:
- Actress Jessie Mei Li as Alina Starkov
- Ben Barnes as the Darkling/General Kirigan
- Archie Renaux in the role of Malyen “Mal” Oretsov
- Freddy Carter portrays Kaz Brekker
- Inej Ghafa as Amita Suman
- Kit Young in the role of Jesper Fahey
- The actress Danielle Gilligan plays Nina Zenik
- Matthias Helvar as Calahan Skogman
- Zoe Wanamaker plays Baghra
- Zoya Nazyalensky as Sujaya Dasgupta
Alina and Mal, Shadow and Bone’s principal protagonists are almost certain to return, and Kirigan is still alive after being attacked in the Shadow Fold at the end of season 1.
Kaz, Jesper, and Inej should also be part of the season 2 cast. We should see this trio link up with Nina and Matthias, as it happened in the Six of Crows duology. Season 1’s final episode hinted at this, so expect them to join forces as in the novels.
As for which characters will make the transition from Bardugo’s books to the live-action TV series, Heisserer has said that there will be “100 percent more Wylan” in season 2. In Fjerdan’s military stronghold, Wylan Van Eck joins the Dregs as a demolitions expert. However, we do not know if season 2 will continue this storyline.
Another possible season 2 character is Nikolai Lantsov. Nikolai goes by the pseudonym Sturnhound and leads a pirate armada that aids Ravka’s war effort. In Siege and Storm, Nikolai becomes a crucial ally to Alina and Mal, so if Netflix’s adaptation mainly follows Siege and Storm’s storyline in season 2, his arrival will be crucial.
As Heisserer hints during a chat with Inverse, Nikolai could be a new cast member when season 2’s casting announcements reveal.

Shadow and Bone season 2 plot: how will it unfold?
Season 2 may include stories from Siege and Storm and Six of Crows. Following season 1’s finale, Alina and Mal are going their separate ways to the Dregs. Season 2 will take Alina out of Kirigan’s reach by traveling to new lands.
Towards the end of season 1, Kirigan unleashes his Darkling powers and creates a new creature called Nichevo’ya. Due to their ability to move in broad daylight, these monsters pose a great challenge for Alina and Mal, unlike the Volcra in the Fold.
Ben Barnes, the actor who plays Kirigan in Netflix’s TV show, is interested in seeing the story in season 2 “break away” from the book in the same way that the first season incorporated Alina’s arc with the Dregs.
It is unclear whether the series’ other producers will do so, but if they do it will add a unique twist to the source material. Fans would get some new content, like season 1, but we’ll have to see if the show’s creative team pursues this avenue.
In the meantime, the Dregs are likely to team up with Nina in order to free Matthias, with the duo – and possibly Wylan – key to Kaz’s plan to rescue Bo Yul-Bayur, an inventor of a drug Grisha find addictive, from Fjerda’s Ice Court. Shadow and Bone season 2 may alter Bo’s rescue, since the Ice Court’s heist angle was used in season 1 to try and capture Alina.
In addition to Zoya’s storyline, a second Grishaverse duology – King of Scars – could also be adapted. Zoya was a supporting character in Bardugo’s Grisha trilogy, but she takes on a more prominent role in his second duology, and elements of that story may make it into the TV show, as the author teased in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly.

What Season 1 finale predict?
In the season 1 finale, we saw Zoya heading to Novokribrisk – the city Kirigan destroys with the Fold – in search of her family. Zoya can team up with the Dregs again when she finds that they’re gone, as she did in Six of Crows’ Crooked Kingdom, or use parts of her story from King of Scars.
Shadow and Bone Season 2: Number of Episodes
We do know how many episodes season 2 will have. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a new eight-episode se of Shadow and Bone is in the works.
Though it’s unclear whether this will focus exclusively on Alina and Mal’s trip, or whether the Dregs and Zoya will also be featuring (as per the speculation above). Netflix will provide a synopsis, or the cast and crew will post about the new show on social media. Until then, we’re just as in the dark as you are.
