In 2020, Samsung joined the bandwagon and started releasing more affordable versions of their flagship phones. The company named it the “FE” series (Fan Edition Series). After the S20 FE and S21 FE, Samsung fans now eagerly await the release of the Samsung Galaxy S22 FE. However, if rumours are to be believed, we may not get an S22 FE this year. Here is everything you need to know about the possibly upcoming phone!
What is the Samsung Galaxy FE Series?
Back in 2020, Samsung launched the very first FE model of their flagship Galaxy phones. This was the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE, and it took the tech market by storm. The S20 FE proved to be one of the best smartphones of the year. The reason for the phone’s immense popularity was largely its reduced price compared to the normal Samsung Galaxy S20. The S20 FE retailed for a respectable $699 USD, whereas its counterpart, the Galaxy S20, retailed for a whopping $999 USD. This significant price drop of $300 USD managed to steer a large market towards it. Moreover, it had almost all of the upgraded features and design of its more expensive version. For users wanting the latest phone but not wanting to spend a solid grand on the phone, the FE provided the ideal solution.
In January 2022, Samsung released the successor for the pioneer FE series, the S21 FE. Similar to its predecessor, this phone also had mostly the same features but at a lower price point compared to the Galaxy S21.
Did Samsung Cancel The Galaxy S22 FE? Why?
When Samsung decided to release the FE series, it announced that all flagship models would receive an affordable FE version. This proved true for the first S20 and S21 for sure. Ideally, this should also be the case for the Samsung Galaxy S22 FE. Unfortunately, after just two years of the fan edition phones, Samsung may put an end to the FE series altogether. SamMobile was the first to make this claim.
However, other rumours suggest that instead of the S22 FE, Samsung may release a more affordable version of the S21 FE. This cheaper version would have the SnapDragon 720G chipset. Although, this development is not a surprise to the users.
Samsung launched its Galaxy S21 FE in January 2022, just one month prior to the Galaxy S22 launch. The S21 FE retailed for $699, similar to its predecessor. However, it did not do nearly as well as the first FE phone. The disappointing response came largely due to the fact that only a month later, Samsung released the S22 series at a reduced price of $700 USD. As a result, the majority of the FE market shifted towards the flagship Galaxy S22, which now retailed for only $100 USD more.
Therefore, people who were in the market for a new phone were more drawn toward the S22 as compared to the S21 FE. Having a newer version released just a mere month later made the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE feel quite obsolete.
Could Samsung Galaxy S22 FE Still be a Possibility?
While more rumours suggest that Samsung Galaxy S22 FE is not in production, there is still a chance for the phone to release. Samsung is yet to officially confirm if they discontinued the series or if they are skipping a model. Many speculate that Samsung may skip the S22 FE series and launch the Samsung Galaxy S23 FE alongside its more expensive S23 counterparts. This means that Samsung is still continuing to produce FE models, just possibly not for S22, unfortunately.
When Could the Galaxy S22 FE release?
Since multiple rumours point us toward Samsung Galaxy S22 FE being cancelled, not much information is available regarding its release date. Nevertheless, if there is an S22 FE phone, then a September release date is most likely possible.
Although Samsung launched its Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4 in August 2022, therefore, if Samsung learned anything from its S21 FE launch failure, it surely would not repeat it with S22 FE (if there is one). Launching a new phone just a month after bringing the latest foldable phones to the market definitely does not seem like a good idea.
Although the S22 FE may never see the light of day, it does not stop tech enthusiasts from speculating its imaginary price point. The S20 Fe and S21 FE had a significant price drop of $300 USD compared to the flagship Galaxy S20 and S21 phones, respectively. Hence, it is likely that if S22 FE releases, it will feature a similar price drop. However, this gets complicated by the fact that Samsung launched the S22 series at a decreased price point to begin with ($799 USD). As a result, if Samsung Galaxy S22 FE is to release, it would have to be significantly reduced in price. The previous FE phones featured a 30% price drop. Judging by this, Samsung should reduce the S22 FE’s price by the same percentage. As a result, if the S22 FE launches, it should retail for about $559-599 USD.
Currently, there is no reliable source detailing the features of the Samsung Galaxy S22 FE phones. Nonetheless, this should not be a surprise because rumours regarding its cancellation seem quite reliable. According to a Korean Blogger, Samsung fully dropped the FE series from any future launches. The tech giant previously did this with their Note series. Therefore, this should not be a surprise.
Conversely, some not-so-reliable- tipsters suggest that the FE did go into production and would allegedly feature the Mediatek Dimensity 9000 Chip. Although, the claims gathered traction when Business Korea seconded this claim. Till now, Samsung phones are equipped with Snapdragon chips or Exynos Chips. Hence, switching to Mediatek would surely prove to be an interesting development.
