Mark Zuckerberg is set to take the virtual reality experience to the next level with Project Cambria. What simply started as a concept has materialized and is closer to its release than you think. Here is everything you need to know about the upcoming release from Zuckerberg’s Meta.
This new device, code-named Project Cambria, is set to be the next best VR headset from Meta, following the metaverse theme. While many expected this would replace the upcoming Oculus Quest 2 headset, that is not the case. While the Oculus sets cater specifically to gaming audiences, this next-generation headset would cover a much more vast audience. The company claims that this could also replace the everyday laptop or PC-based work. While the device would revolutionize the everyday work experience, users could still utilize it for VR gaming. Although, Oculus Quest 3 would ideally be the premium gaming headset.
Famously known as Project Cambria, the headset is likely to be named the Oculus Quest Pro. Nevertheless, chatter about the new and improved Oculus Quest 2 Pro is also widespread. The Facebook CEO held a conference regarding tor metaverse in October 2021. At the conference, Zuckerberg described this next-generation device as a “new advanced and high-end product.” In a Facebook post, he further elaborated that the entire purpose of the device was to perfectly integrate virtual reality into the physical world around us.
When Does Project Cambria Release?
For months, eager tech enthusiasts tried to grapple with any information regarding the new headset. An internally leaked report from the company in June described the upcoming headset as the most important VR headset. The following month, speculations regarding the actual name of Project Cambria started doing the rounds. Many believe that “Meta Quest Pro” is the actual name for the device.
While many rumours regarding the specs and name of the headset did rounds, the actual release date remained a mystery. Earlier this year, Mark Zuckerberg announced his plans to release the device in the second half of 2022. According to the latest update, the Meta Quest Pro, code-named Project Cambria, would have an October 2022 release date. He disclosed this information during a Joe Rogan podcast. Moreover, he also unveiled that the company would launch the Meta Quest Pro during the company’s annual Connect event.

Next generation Features of the Meta Quest Pro
While talking about the upcoming Meta Quest Pro headset, Zuckerberg stated that the VR headset would allow users to activate new social options using advanced facial and eye tracking. Being able to have actual eye contact in a virtual reality setting would truly set the experience a class apart. Facial tracking would allow the meta avatar to re-create facial expressions in real time. When the user smiles or pouts or frowns, their avatar replicates it.
Like the Meta Quest 2, Project Cambria would also be a fully wireless and self-sufficient headset. However, users could still connect the VR headset to their gaming PCs for even more enhanced performance. Conversely, the Meta Air Link would allow for a completely cordless experience for this as well.
Project Cambria puts foveated rendering to use by taking the eye tracking feature to the next level. This feature allows users to have a high-resolution focus on objects directly in the user’s line of sight. All other things in the background or out of the player’s line of sight would comparably scale down. Not only would this allow for a more enhanced experience, but it would also save wastage of background processing power.

Price Point for Project Cambria
The team is yet to reveal the exact price for this upcoming VR reality headset. Nonetheless, based on the extensive features predicted for Project Cambria, we can surely say that it will not come cheap. Moreover, the Facebook CEO also claims it would be “at the higher end of the price spectrum.”
Increasing the price of the Oculus Quest 2 implies that even current-generation VR headsets are becoming more expensive. Hence, Meta’s mixed reality headset would cost more than $399.99. As per numerous speculations, the Meta Quest Pro may hold a solid price tag of USD 1000. This increased price puts the headset even higher than the Valve Index.
